Collected by J. Medici, 2015
Quartz crystals have grown upon and mostly replaced stalactic growths of Goethite. There is still a small amount of the original material at the core of each stalactite. The Quartz crystals have a high, sparkly luster and are colored with a thin coating of iron oxides in shades from yellow orange to red orange The underlying matrix is composed of Flint for which the location is famous. The specimen was collected by renowned field collector John Medici and his son Jay.. These are the only specimens from this location I have ever seen with nothing like them listed on mindat, nor are any iron oxide minerals listed although Hematite and Limonite are both listed for the county. A scratch test of the material gives a yellow/brown ocher color more indicative of Goethite or Limonite which could also include Hematite. It is John Medici's opinion that the stalactite growths were original Hematite which pseudomorphed to Goethite and then Quartz. Regarding the location, the Flint Ridge deposit extends for several miles. Many specimen are erroneously labeled as being from nearby Licking Co. where there is a state park and historic native American diggings. Nethers farm is open to collectors on a fee basis.
Condition: Fairly Good
Flaws: Only a few of the stalactites are terminated.
